for general service at the Superintendence - Court and Magistracy attached to the Water Department but obedient to Calls for his services at the Supreme Court. Endeavours have been made from time to time to secure such an Interpreter and translator, but failed because competency was limited to the languages named and to incidental duties.
With regard to cases in which Interpreters in European languages, such as French, German, Danish and Italian are required, the court is compelled to obtain the services of Police Constables of the respective nationality, and as the cases are severally of a trivial character this plan answers sufficiently well to serve the ends of Justice.
Judges and Magistrates obtain competent Interpreters in any case of moment, remuneration being paid from the amount set down in the Estimates for the purpose. This arrangement also applies to other Eastern languages than those before named, such as Siamese, Burmese, Javanese and Tamil.
With regard to the Chinese languages I beg permission to advert to the past history of the interpretation at the Magistracy, which as few persons know anything about it has been decried severally.
